I was just reading an article about the Moff and him talking about the idea that actually, in Doctor Who, the companion is the main character, and I couldn’t help but notice the article named every main New Who female companion in it, plus Jack, Astrid, and Melanie. No Martha? Not even one acknowledgement anywhere?
And this is what kind of makes me sad about the lack of appreciation for Martha within the Who fandom.
Martha Jones came into the series at a crucial time for the Doctor. She was patient and faithful and he needed her because she supported and protected him after he lost Rose. Despite her affections being unrequited, she refused to let that get in the way of saving people in need. No, Martha Jones handled it like an adult. She stood by the Doctor’s side with strength and dignity and with a level of maturity unmatched by any other companion.
Say what you like about her (because yes, she had her flaws, as we all do) but she was resourceful, smart, self-reliant, and hell, she was a doctor too. There were several times throughout series 3 where Martha ended up saving the day, be it by resuscitating the Doctor or by walking the Earth, telling stories and giving hope and faith to the human race as her entire civilization was torn down around her, and not because she loved The Doctor, but because she refused to run away and hide and let humanity burn when she had the ability to do something about it. For me, she represented all of humanity’s potential and power. Doctor Martha Jones.
And, not to sound shallow or anything, but that red leather jacket of hers was an inspired decision on the costume department’s part.
Thanks for proving me wrong, Martha Jones.
Why are you even fucking watching the show if you’ve hated two of the best and only companions onscreen, so far?
Ugh. I can refute arguments against nearly any companion you care to mention and you know why people hate Martha?
She’s the type of companion they could never be. They’re not strong enough to walk away from the Doctor. They’re not strong enough or smart enough to see that he’s breaking them to bits and that they have to get out, that they have to go back to reality to survive because they’re only human and they’re not built for his mad way of life - because he’s broken already, and he brings his human companions up, up to the stars, to watch them burn out like supernovas. Except Martha Jones knew that. She knew she’d never be important enough to the Doctor so she went home and she shone there, where she wouldn’t burn out, only burn bright, and she saved lives and made a difference in a place where there was a chance that someone might remember her name, instead of as that strange woman who walked with the Destroyer of Worlds.
Can any of us say that we could ever do that? That we wouldn’t travel with him until our hearts broke?
Rose became the Bad Wolf. It was not her own power that destroyed the Daleks. But Martha walked the Earth, on her own two feet, unnoticed and alone, and saved the Universe from destruction.
Can any of us say we could ever do that, either?
No.
Commentary. Plus I’d like to add a few thoughts.
The Doctor chooses humans because we have such capacity to love, to emote, to be an example of how to live—especially those he chooses. But he can’t see that it is this very quality that causes him to lose them, over and over. We love too much, feel too much, can’t cover it up with logic and knowledge and experience like he does. Rose is a prime example, but so is Sarah Jane. Too much adoration, too much love can’t exist for long without sustenance and it is that which the Doctor cannot give. He can’t share the experience of simply being human in a vast universe and without that companions lose their “grip” on their humanity—they become more; too much more, usually; and—as wibbly put it—go supernova.
The Doctor can’t see it. Can’t see our limits—not purely physical but psychic as well. Martha could. Martha, a med student, someone who knew who she was and what she wanted before she met the Doctor was able to see her limits, see that she was starting to push past, and not in a good way. Martha knew that she wasn’t going to get what she needed to stay okay so she did what she had to to take care of herself. She could see what a lifetime with the Doctor meant, really. It meant losing her life on Earth and even losing her place among humanity. So she left.
She took the experience and became a star on Earth, and if you have seen Torchwood you know just how bright she shines.
Martha Jones is stronger than I am. And she’s probably stronger than you too.

aw thanks! Glad to see more and more people appreciate this amazing lady!
And you may judge me, but I stand by this:
MARTHA JONES IS FUCKING AMAZING AND PEOPLE NEED TO BACK OFF WITH THE WHOLE HATING HER THING. ROSE LEFT. MARTHA HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THAT.
And if people could just look at her independently of Rose and the fact that she has a crush on someone (You’re a total hypocrite if that’s why you hate her. Unless you’re a Cyberman who has never had a crush on someone.) then you would see what makes her the BEST FUCKING COMPANION FROM THE TENNANT YEARS. She’s intelligent, brave, loyal, strong, and she has self-respect. If you need me to break down how I know all these things then here you go -
1) Intelligent - She’s a med student, and just being a med student takes so much hard work and intelligence (Props to all the med students who exist out there. I could never do what you do.)
2) Brave - Really, this is an attribute every companion has.
3) Loyal - See Human Nature and Family of Blood. ’Nuff said.
4) Strong - See the episodes with the Master, where Martha treks the globe for a whole year while the Doctor just sits and waits. I love the Doctor, but he should not be getting the credit for freeing himself from the Master’s grip when Martha did all the tough work.
5) Self-respect - I sense this will be the one most people disagree with me on. But, in the end she leaves the Doctor. She. Leaves. Him. Because she eventually figures out that he has never given her the respect she truly deserved (he should have bowed down and kissed her feet after the Family of Blood) and she knew it was unhealthy because she still wanted to be with him so she got out. If she didn’t have self-respect she would have stayed with the Doctor.
MARTHA JONES. FUCK YEAH.
Martha Jones
Originally, I was going to put Martha tomorrow, under ‘Character I love and other people hate,’ but after reading this excellent post by misssynph, I realized that this would be a better place for Martha, because she’s screwed over horribly by canon, and it’s incredibly unfair.
I loved Martha on day one. She was gorgeous and wanted to be a doctor and sassed the Doctor and helped save everyone. And I was impressed, and the Doctor was impressed, too! He made lots of impressed noises and impressed faces. And then…nope! One trip only, as a courtesy. After he offered Donna full companionship during the Christmas episode. Martha gets one trip.
Obviously it turns into more, but he’s a dick about it until he finally gives her a key. And he constantly compares her to Rose, which, even if Martha didn’t fancy him, would be a dick move. He takes her to some awful places, and some places that aren’t dangerous for him but are for her, and in Human Nature/Family of Blood she’s trapped working as a servant and treated like garbage, and apparently he’s still not working in Blink, because she says that she’s supporting him.
And then at the end, she walks the Earth and tells stories about him, the whole time working on faith because she doesn’t really know if it will work, and she doesn’t know anything about her family or whether they’re safe, and she realizes that she’s great, and she doesn’t have to put up with this shit, and she deserves better. So she leaves and it’s a pretty great ending for her, except for the fact that holy shit, did she have to go through hell to get there. The weirdest part (weirdest, not worst) of Martha’s story would have to be that apparently she ended her engagement to Tom-the-Doctor and married Mickey instead, but we have no idea how that even happened. My current favorite theory is she married them both, but still, weird.
SO YEAH. Martha got screwed over by canon, big time. She’s a great character, funny and dry and courageous. She knows that she deserves better but she keeps holding on to hope that the Doctor will like her back, or at the very least appreciate her the way she deserves to be appreciated. And it doesn’t happen, so that sense of self-worth kicks in. And she goes on to do all right for herself, with UNIT and her husbands and such, but it doesn’t change the fact that she was beautiful and capable and wonderful, and canon completely fucked her over.
PS Can we just take a moment to appreciate how beautiful Freema Agyeman is? Absolutely stunning
Because my friend just started watching Doctor Who and is complaining about her.
I mean, I was still mourning Rose, but I loved Martha right away. She was just, well, awesome. It’s not like it’s her fault that Rose is gone. And the Doctor just completely ignores her the whole entire time, which breaks my heart. I mean, I think it’s reasonable for the Doctor to be the way he is. He’s mourning Rose, and he loved her, and now she’s gone and he doesn’t believe he’ll ever see her again. And he’s so lonely, and you can’t really expect much from him. But that’s no reason to hate on Martha. She saved so many people, and she’s so brave and awesome, and I just love her. Her story just breaks my heart because the one person she loved never even looked at her, and just totally looked straight past her. I feel like I know what it’s like to be ignored by the people you care about, and, well, I feel for her. And she’s never stupid. She’s so smart, she’s amazing. And her personality is awesome. And I know I’m using the word awesome a lot, but that is what Martha Jones is. Martha Jones is the prime example of awesome. I just really, really love her, okay?
As many of you may(or may not) know, I love Martha Jones. She’s intelligent, kind, inquisitive, and has a healthy thirst for knowledge. These qualities make her an excellent companion for the Doctor and were highlighted during Smith and Jones. I admired her tenacity and her willingness to put up with the Doctor’s (let’s be real here) shitty behavior towards her just to be a friend to him(even while she hoped it would turn into something more). I also love the fact that she asked the Doctor questions about how things work! As a person with a curious, analytical disposition, I was happy to see that reflected in a companion because if I was in their place, I would do the same thing.
During her time with the Doctor, she proved again and again just how very capable she was of getting shit done and saving the day(saving the Doctor countless times, taking initiative and problem-solving during times of crisis, something that *gasp* the Doctor himself does all the damn time). So by the time that Last of the Time Lords came along, I was cheering her on as she defeated The Master. She defeated him all on her own, without any outside magical intervention, just her and her own sheer human will and strength. This is why I love her above all other companions. Yes, all of the others had their moment of greatness, but to me, Martha’s crowning moment was greater than the rest solely because of the fact that she did it all by herself.
I have to admit, I burst into tears when she talked to the Doctor in the end and told him that she was done traveling with him. This was my Doomsday moment but not because it was sad(which in a way, it was), but because here was this amazing person finally realizing just how wonderful she was and how this person, the brilliant and magnificent Martha Jones, was aware enough to see that it was her time to go. It takes a lot of courage to travel with the Doctor, but I think that it requires even more courage to actively chose to leave, before being forced to by circumstance. So here’s to you Martha Jones, the woman who saved the world, because like the Doctor said “Martha Jones, you’re a star.”
I just finished re-watching Last of the Time Lords and aaakjsdhfakdjfghkdfjgh i can’t even deal with my vast Martha love. She is just the most beautifully selfless person ever. After fucking nearly single-handedly saving the world, and having next to no one remember it, how tempting would to be to run away, just forget all of it, escape your responsibilities? But not Martha Jones, oh no, she sees the impact that The Year That Never Was had on her family, and she knows that they need her more than ever. Flawless, selfless, amazing Martha Jones could never turn her back on them.
It’s not about any of that. I didn’t care if the Doctor ever returned her feelings, mostly because I don’t ship the Doctor with anyone. The reason why people (including myself) say he treats her like crap is because half the time he doesn’t treat her like a real companion. He treated Rose like she was his girlfriend, and treated Martha like a rebound; that she’s somehow less important because she came after Rose. He never told Martha that he and Rose were in love, or that he lost her in a parallel universe. He does tell Martha that “Rose would know. You shouldn’t blame yourself, you’re a novice. I’ll send you home tomorrow.” I have never wanted to slap the Doctor harder, especially since most of the time Rose just pointed out the obvious, and now we’re pretending she was the smartest person the Doctor’s ever travelled with? Bullshit. There isn’t a single incarnation of the Doctor that spends this much time moping/angsting about the loss of his previous companion and it becomes grating and stalls the Doctor’s growth. He tells Martha that he’s brought his previus companion to these same planets before (and he brings her to the slums of that planet) he’s always telling her “just one more trip and your gone,” she brings up interesting questions about Time travel and history and he usually responds in a cold, dismissive, or condescending manner. Yeah, the biggest science geek in the entire universe shrugging off legitamite intelligent questions. No other companion has ever had to work this hard to be deemed worthy of travelling in the Tardis. I was legitimally disgusted with the Doctor’s behavior throughout series 3, and I only forgave him because he realized his mistake in series 4. So, yeah, I don’t know where you got “I’ll clean his toilets” and Martha was ungrateful. The Doctor was the ungrateful one, and based on how he has treated previous and future companions, Martha really did get cheated.Unpopular Dr. Who opinion time:
